Evolution™ Series Locomotive

The Evolution locomotive cuts key emissions up to 40 percent as compared to our prior models and was the first locomotive that met new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards while delivering as much as 10 percent lower lifecycle costs to customers.

Environmental Benefit

Compared to tier 0 locomotives manufactured 25 years ago, the GE Evolution™ Series produces 83 percent fewer particulates and 60 percent fewer nitrogen oxide emissions.

Operating Benefit

Compared to GE locomotives built in 2004, a single Evolution™ Series locomotive will consume 189,000 fewer gallons of fuel in its lifetime – or enough to power another Evolution Series™ locomotive for seven months.

GE’s Evolution™ Series Locomotives prove that it is possible to reduce locomotive lifecycle costs while simultaneously meeting the more stringent Tier II emissions requirements from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

This five-year, U.S. $250 million ecomagination project has resulted in a locomotive that improves fuel efficiency while reducing emissions. As the name implies, Evolution™ Series Locomotives incorporate the best of existing, proven diesel locomotive engineering with our newest, most advanced technologies.

A closer look at an Evolution™ Series Locomotive's advanced engine technology, control system and cooling system prove that saving money and the environment are not mutually exclusive.

The new GEVO 12-cylinder diesel engine in the Evolution™ Series Locomotive produces the same 4,400 horsepower as its 16-cylinder predecessor. And it does so using less fuel.

The GEVO-12 engine produces 40 percent fewer emissions than our prior models.

The Evolution™ Series Locomotive incorporates our most advanced cooling system in rail transport to increase reliability while lowering maintenance costs.

In addition to a standard radiator and fan configuration, locomotives powered by the GEVO-12 engine use dual fans to enhance performance while lowering emissions.

The consolidated control architecture also makes it easier for customers to upgrade software to enhance performance and achieve lower emissions.

If every freight train in North America were pulled by an Evolution™ Series Locomotive, the annual reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions would be equivalent to removing 48 million cars from the road each year.
