Environmental Performance Services with Telematics

We help companies strengthen environmental and operating performance by tailoring strategies for the cars and trucks they use for service, sales and delivery. Through analysis and reporting, customized vehicle selection, and integrated vehicle efficiency tools, our customers reduce operating costs and manage CO2 emissions.

Environmental Benefit

GE Fleet's Strategic Consulting Services group works with our customers to optimize the fuel economy of their fleet, resulting in lower fuel costs and CO2 emissions. Selecting a more fuel-efficient vehicle and moving to a smaller vehicle class, or including hybrids, can result in a 17 to 59 percent improvement in fuel consumption for a fleet, generating annual per-vehicle savings of $350 to $700 in fuel costs at $2.00 per gallon while avoiding the emission of 1.6 to 3.2 metric tons of CO2 per year.

Operating Benefit

By re-assigning, re-sequencing and optimizing the number of vehicles for a specific route, GE Fleet's Route Optimization telematics software can significantly reduce distance traveled. For example, a field test involving a delivery fleet of 12 light trucks yielded a reduction in distance traveled of 20 percent to 40 percent, depending on the implementation strategy. Per vehicle, this yielded an annual savings of $1,900 to $3,800 in diesel costs at $2.50 per gallon, while avoiding between 7.5 and 15 metric tons of CO2 emissions.

The environmental challenge

Companies that use cars and trucks for service, sales and delivery face a special challenge in balancing the need for operational efficiency with protecting the environment. For many companies, finding this balance has become increasingly difficult.

GE’s innovative solution

GE helps companies strengthen environmental and operating performance by mapping tailored strategies for the cars and trucks they use for service, sales, and delivery. Through our strategic analysis and reporting, customized vehicle selection and integrated vehicle efficiency tools, our customers both reduce operating costs and improve their CO2 emissions profile.

Environmental impact

GE’s environmental performance roadmap reduces fuel consumption, which reduces CO2 emissions. For each gallon of gasoline burned during vehicle operation, approximately 20 pounds of CO2 are released into the atmosphere. Reducing fuel consumption leads directly to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Cutting costs

Fuel consumption reduction has a direct cost-savings impact. Lower fuel consumption results in lower cost. GE estimates that customers can save as much as 240 gallons of gasoline, or about U.S. $690, per vehicle each year through our telematics services, improving the average fuel economy of a mixed vehicle fleet by 8 percent.

GE’s truck engineering specialists can help identify fuel-saving technologies for truck fleets. For example, auxiliary power units (APUs) reduce gasoline burn by about 75 percent when a truck is idling — a fuel savings of approximately U.S. $3,000 per vehicle each year.
