Hospitals Inspired by ecomagination
GE’s Hospitals Inspired by ecomagination program offers a suite of products and services that will help customers build new hospitals that increase patient satisfaction, significantly lower energy consumption, emissions and water usage and reduce operational costs.
Environmental Benefit
Hospitals in this program are designed to achieve energy savings of at least 17.5 percent, 20 percent in water savings and 17.5 percent in greenhouse gas emissions beyond the baseline defined by LEED Healthcare standard, created by the U.S. Green Building Council.
Operating Benefit
A hospital inspired by ecomagination is designed to save approximately $290,000 per year in energy savings compared to a typical U.S. 200 bed hospital.
The environmental challenge
The challenges associated with operating a healthcare facility continue to expand with higher energy prices, increasing water scarcity and for the need for more environmental stewardship and conservation efforts. Worldwide, buildings account for 17 percent of freshwater withdrawals, 25 percent of wood harvest, 33 percent of CO2 emission and 40 percent of materials and energy usage. Hospitals use an even higher share of resources and almost three times the energy of an equal sized commercial building. With this in mind, hospital executives are looking for strategies to reduce operating costs and less environmental impact.
GE’s innovative solution
GE has created a program that helps new hospitals incorporate design elements and products to reduce its energy usage, water consumption and emissions. GE will work with each hospital to design a customized solution, which will enable them to achieve their operating and environmental goals.
Environmental impact
Hospitals in this program are designed to avoid approximately 3.7 million pounds of CO2 per year compared to an average 200-bed hospital in the U.S., which is equivalent to the CO2 absorbed by over 510 acres of southeastern U.S. forest each year, or the emissions of nearly 330 average U.S. cars per year. From a water perspective, a Hospital Inspired by ecomagination is designed to reduce consumption by approximately 7.2 million gallons per year compared to an average U.S. 200 bed hospital, which is equivalent to the annual water usage of more than 55 U.S. households.
Cutting costs
Hospitals in this program are designed to save approximately $290,000 per year in water and energy expenses compared to an average 200-bed hospital in the U.S.
