DLN 2.6+ Combustion System

The DLN 2.6+ Combustion System, GE’s latest evolution of Dry Low NOx technology for our 9FA gas turbines, reduces NOx emissions to between 9 and 15 parts per million. This combustion system incorporates the latest in technology to improve stability, reduce emissions and extend outage intervals.

Environmental Benefit

The DLN 2.6+ Combustion System reduces turbine NOx emissions by 40 percent and enables the turbine to be operated at lower power during off-peak periods, consuming less fuel. This fuel savings helps reduce plant operating costs and lower CO2 emissions.

Operating Benefit

Customers have added plant flexibility and operability due to extended maintenance outage intervals and an increased ability to operate the turbine within a wider range of power levels.

The environmental challenge

The Lombardy region of Northern Italy has imposed strict environmental requirements in an effort to improve the air quality in the region. The new regulations require that the area's Cassano-d'Adda power plant, which provides power to the region (including the city of Milan), reduce its NOx emissions. The stricter guidelines left the plant with only two options: 1) employ a post combustion control system (which is expensive to install and requires the frequent purchase of costly ammonia) or 2) shut down the plant.

GE’s innovative solution

GE gave them a third option, one that used GE’s research and technological know-how to enable the Cassano-d'Adda power plant to meet the new requirements and continue to operate at a fraction of the cost of the initially planned post combustion control solution.

Cassano-d'Adda and GE upgraded the plant equipment with DLN 2.6+ Combustion Systems. The DLN 2.6+ technology builds upon decades of GE leadership and experience in the area of combustion technology. It combines leading-edge combustion technology with design innovations to deliver a product which guarantees a NOx emission level of 15ppm, which not only meets but exceeds both Italy's and the European Union's emission level restrictions. Beyond meeting emission regulation, the DLN 2.6+ technology also improves the plant's stability, extends outage intervals and led to increased energy output for the residents of Milan and Lombardy.

Environmental impact

Reducing the NOx level to 15 ppm represents a 40 percent reduction in emissions from what the plant was generating previously. Each DLN 2.6+ system installed provides the environmental benefit equal to planting 75 acres of trees or taking 125 cars off the roads of Europe.

Cutting costs

Installation of GE’s DLN 2.6+ technology has improved the partial load operating range of the turbines. The plant's turbines now operate more effectively at lower power during off-peak periods resulting in a reduction in the amount of fuel consumed. This fuel savings helps further reduce plant operating costs and lower emissions.
