CFM56-3 Advanced Upgrade

The CFM56-3 Advanced Upgrade modifies key components of the CFM56-3 engine extending its “time on wing” (TOW) to lower maintenance costs and improve fuel efficiency, resulting in lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions and better operating performance for customers.

Environmental Benefit

A single aircraft upgraded with the CFM56-3 Advanced Upgrade kit can improve high-power fuel efficiency (takeoff, climb, cruise) by 1.6 percent, annually preventing more than 270 tons of greenhouse gases from being released.

Operating Benefit

The CFM56-3 Advanced Upgrade kit provides operating and maintenance costs benefits that can increase the residual value of the CFM56-3 engine. According to an independent appraisal by the International Bureau of Aviation, the residual value of a mature, mid-life CFM56-3 engine with the Advanced Upgrade kit is approximately $332,000, or 10 percent higher than an engine in the same condition that has not been upgraded.

The environmental challenge

CFM International, a 50/50 joint company between GE and Snecma, set out to design an upgrade for the CFM56 engine to address customers' increasing focus on total cost of ownership by lowering maintenance costs and achieving better fuel efficiency.

GE’s innovative solution

The upgrade kit provides greater engine and component reliability, fewer engine removals, lower scrap rates on component hardware, improved residual value of the aircraft and reduced spare engine ratio.

Environmental impact

If today's fleet of 1,950 737 classics had the CFM56-3 Advanced Upgrade Kit installed, annual carbon dioxide emissions for that fleet would be reduced by an amount equal to removing more than 101,000 cars from the road in the U.S. for a year.

Cutting costs

A single aircraft upgraded with the CFM56-3 Advanced Upgrade Kit can save airline customers more than $56,000 each year in fuel costs, assuming fuel costs of $2 per gallon.
